A university-wide biodiversity information network
Prince of Songkla University maintains a network of biodiversity databases that support
long-term monitoring, conservation planning, and sustainable land management across southern Thailand.
These databases integrate verified records of plants, animals, fungi, and local biological resources
collected through university research, museum collections, herbarium specimens, and the
Royal Initiative of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (RSPG).
The university’s RSPG Resource Survey Centre coordinates 48 taxonomic experts
responsible for validating and managing biodiversity records collected from university campuses
and research sites. Since 2024, the centre has documented 1,390 verified resource records,
covering multiple categories of biological resources under the national RSPG framework.
Regional data for conservation and land-use planning
In parallel, the PSU RSPG Coordinating Centre maintains a regional database containing
more than 18,000 biodiversity records contributed by local administrative organisations,
schools, universities, and community networks. These datasets are used to monitor changes in biodiversity,
identify areas of conservation importance, support ecological restoration, and provide scientific evidence
for land-use planning and sustainable management of local natural resources.
The university further complements these systems through the PSU Herbarium,
the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum Collections Database,
and the Medicinal Plant Database, creating an integrated biodiversity information infrastructure
that supports research, education, conservation, and evidence-based policy development.
